In the village

Chiroubles is a village with around 400 inhabitants, overlooking the Beaujolais vineyards and the Saône Valley.

Its slopes are charming with green undulating landscapes, accentuated by vineyards.

On the heights, this panorama becomes more diverse, with heathland, meadows and woods.

In clear weather, from here you can admire the Alps and majestic Mont Blanc.

Hiking and walking trails

Breath-taking views over all 10 Beaujolais Crus and beyond.

If you enjoy hiking and hill walking, you’ll love Chiroubles. 3 circuits with variants have been set out and marked through the vineyards.  On foot, road or mountain bike or horseback…Leave from the village centre using the village emblem as your guide! Specific mountain bike trails use the same markings.

Sentier Victor covers 100 km through Red Beaujolais, winding through the Beaujolais Cru vineyards. Nature lovers will find everything they look for along the marked paths with stop-offs in the 12 resonantly named towns and villages of Beaujeu Lantignié, Régnié-Durette, Villié-Morgon, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Chénas, Juliénas, Jullié, Emeringes, Vauxrenard and Avenas. (luggage transfer may be available from hospitality providers)

Should you prefer a more leisurely walk, follow the « Circuit panoramique des 10 Crus ». This is a superb 1.5 km panoramic trail that leaves from the Maison du Cru Chiroubles. Along the way are a number of displays with information about what you can see. This is an ideal way to uncover the secrets of the 10 Beaujolais Crus.

Cadoles and Heritage

On one of your walks, you may discover Chapelle St Roch, that was built in 1629. Faced with the plague that was decimating their village, the inhabitants of Chiroubles decided to found votive or ‘baptised’ chapel: Chapelle St Roch at the named place of « Javernand », above the village. From here, a visitor may admire a splendid panoramic view over the Beaujolais region and the Saône Valley.

A cadole is a simple structure in the vineyards that provided shelter to vineworkers. They are dotted throughout the vineyards. These age-old cots are often dry-stone, built using the rocks found on site or that had been piled togeher on what were locally called « Piarris ».

There are picnic areas at the La Terrasse, Saint Roch, Le Bois Neuf and Le Turget.

Eglise Saint Germain

The present-day church dates from 1838. The architect who designed the bell tower and dome as you see them today was Monsieur DURET. The entire building is 13.75 metres in width and its length is exactly double that at 27.50 metres. The church is made up of three naves separated by columns with capitals. Two of these columns are monolithic and they are said to have required 40 oxen to haul them. Work to completely restore the bell tower and facades was started in 2010.

On the village square is a statue to Victor Pulliat that was inaugurated on 3rd September 1898, to celebrate the memory of the man who dissimulated grafting and thus saved the vineyard.
